Both of these guys Bowsey Bow (dark color) and Beatle Bailey (off white color) have bit numerous people in their former lives. Beatle Beailey came to us from a Long Island family and Bowsey Bow came from a woman in Boston (Go Red Sox).

In both cases, just like pretty much all the dogs here at Spirit Animal Sanctuary. The owners after going through a few different Dog Trainers and/or Behaviorists with less than stellar results. Were faced with a horrible decision, especially after those dog training professionals told the owners that they should euthanize their dogs.

If the trainers and / or behaviorists they had hired, would have focused more on figuring out how to get the animals to let go of their fears and apprehensions. Instead of trying to modify those behaviors with Obedience Commands, Counter Conditioning, High Value Food Rewards or the equally ineffective Time Outs and No Free Lunch. Maybe, just maybe the owners would still be loving their dogs today, instead of going through the heartbreak and pain of giving their dogs away. Regardless of how great, Spirit Animal Sanctuary is for dogs.

I’d like to thank my friend Steve, and his wife Terry for taking the pictures of their daughter Kayla with our dogs, while visiting them.

  1. Hello Chris,

I can’t remember if I got back to you or not. The hardest thing about this is you have to find other dogs that are very well socialized and owners that are willing to help you. Learning how to relax your dog when he gets nervous will help a lot, but at some point he’s gotta meet some dogs. Tell me what your doing know, with him ?

  2. I have a boxer that is reactive to other dogs. Currently, I am working with a trainer to modify the behavior. What I would really like to do is allieviate my dog’s fear of unfamilar dogs, but I am not sure how to do this. It seems that most books on the subject are all about conter-conditioning, which doesn’t really get at the heart of the matter. What would you suggest I do to help my dog let go of her fears?
