Dog Behavior Myth; #4, TheSpiritDog.WordPress.com

Making dogs aggressive. Tug of war.

The Myth ; Playing tug of war with our dog, teaches him to be aggressive.

The Truth ; Playing tug of war, is a great way to release energy, and is just plain fun for our dog.

The Why ; There are only three ways that our dog knows how, or wants to play with another animal. Human or canine. Tug of war is one of them. Playing tug of war with our dog is one of the easiest ways to build a better bond with him. One of the easiest ways to to start teaching him boundaries. And a very effective and efficient way for us to learn how to communicate better with our dog.

If we have been getting this simple dog behavior wrong all these years. What else are we getting wrong ?

Post script : If you do decide to play with your dog this way. Make sure you buy a long rope tug toy, at least two feet long. The reason is, if your dog starts losing his grip, he will attempt to re-grip the tug toy. And some dogs are not as careful as others, at making sure they grab the rope and not your hands. So make sure the tug toy is long enough, so you can avoid this from happening.

  3. You know after reading some of your other spirit dog posts I started playing tug games with Sonny, my 18 month old pug that showed nervous aggression around other dogs. It took me some time to get the hang of it but the results have so far been amazing.

    Thank you so much.

BTW, I mailed a small donation to your spirit dog sanctuary.
